GHz VLBI survey of compact radio sources ?

چکیده
We present results from 86 GHz VLBI1 observations of 28 compact radio sources made in April 1993. All but two of the observed objects are active galactic nuclei. The remaining two objects are the galactic center Sgr A∗ and the X-ray binary star Cygnus X-3. Of the observed sources, 26 have yielded fringe detections. We present correlated flux densities, estimate the maximum observed brightness temperatures, and provide single Gaussian component model fits. Out of the 17 sources with good uv-coverages, 3 are without detectable structural details (0642+449, 0716+714, and Cygnus A), 3 have little closure phase information (4C67.05, 1823+568, and 1928+738), and the remaining 11 have been imaged. We study the brightness temperatures, Tb, of the observed sources, and apply a basic population model with a single value of the intrinsic brightness temperature, T0, in order to reproduce the observed distribution of Tb. Our data are consistent with a population of sources that have T0 ≤ 5 × 1010 K in the jets, and T0 ∼ 1–4 × 1011 K in the VLBI cores. The observed Tb are also correlated with the apparent speeds measured in the jets. For comparison, we apply the same population scenario to a larger sample of 132 AGN observed with VLBI at 15 GHz, and show that the distribution of brightness temperatures from that sample is consistent with the intrinsic brightness temperature of T0 = 5.3× 1011 K. The observed decrease of Tb along the jets can be reproduced by adiabatic losses in relativistic shocks embedded in the jet.

Compactness of Weak Radio Sources at High Frequencies
We have obtained 8.4 GHz VLBA observations of a 31-GHz complete sample of ∼ 100 sources between 10 and 100 mJy. The main goals of these observations are: to determine the angular size, radio spectra and identification for a weak sample of high frequency sources; to find the fraction of sources which have sufficiently compact emission for use as calibrators for VLBI observations; and for design ...
متن کاملDeep Extragalactic VLBI - Optical Survey ( DEVOS ) II . Efficient VLBI
Context. The Deep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS) aims at constructing a large sample of compact radio sources up to two orders of magnitude fainter than those studied in other Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) surveys. Optical identification of the objects is ensured by selecting them from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) list. Aims. While continuing to build up the DEVOS d...
متن کاملDeep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS) I. Pilot MERLIN and VLBI observations
We present the results of the pilot observations of the Deep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS). Our ultimate aim is to collect information on compact structures in a large sample of extragalactic radio sources (∼ 10 objects) up to two orders of magnitude fainter than those studied in typical imaging Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) surveys up until now. This would lead to an unp...
متن کاملEVN observations of candidate Compact Symmetric Objects
We present pc-scale images of ten Compact Symmetric Objects (CSO) candidates observed with the European VLBI network (EVN). Five radio sources have been observed at 1.6 GHz, and five more at 2.3/8.4 GHz, the latter subsample with the inclusion in the VLBI array of 3 antennae normally used for geodesy. These objects were selected from existing samples of GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources w...
متن کاملVLBI observations of nineteen GHz-Peaked-Spectrum radio sources at 1.6 GHz
Abstract. Aims and Methods: We present the results of VLBI observations of nineteen GHz-Peaked-Spectrum (GPS) radio sources at 1.6 GHz. Of them, 15 sources are selected from the Parkes Half Jansky (PHJ) sample (Snellen 2002), 4 others are from our previous observation list. We aimed at imaging the structure of GPS sources, searching for Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) and studying the absorpti...
متن کاملSmall and young radio sources
It is currently accepted that compact and bright radio sources characterized by a convex spectrum peaking at frequencies ranging from 100 MHz to a few GHz are young objects. In this scenario, high frequency peaker (HFP) radio sources, with a turnover frequency higher than 5 GHz are good candidates to be extremely young radio sources with ages of up to a few thousand years. The knowledge of the ...
